Extra pages for the three different book sizes are $0.49, $0.99, and $2.99 each. Each book starts out with 20 double-sided pages and can fit up to 100. Prices are pretty reasonable: Pocket-size books (7.75 by 5.75 inches) start at $12.95 "classic" hardcovers (11.25 by 8.75 inches) run $29.80 with linen covers and $39.90 with leather and a "deluxe" book (15 by 11.5 inches), available in linen only, costs $59.80. Those of us with little or no scrapbooking skill will welcome the addition, in BookMaker 2.1, of prefab templates for wedding, vacation, and new-baby albums.

Loading images from your hard drive into BookMaker is simple and intuitive-just make sure they look the way you want them to before you open them in the software (but more on that later). You do the actual book building locally, on your Windows or Mac system, using MyPublisher's free BookMaker software, which downloads in about 30 seconds over a broadband connection. Those who like the traditional picture-windowed cover can still opt for it, however.

With the introduction of custom book jackets, My Publisher books have a more polished and professional feel than the older, linen-covered designs. With all the Kodak Galleries, SnapFishes, and ShutterFlys of the world, it's hard to distinguish one online photo site from the other, but MyPublisher and its companion BookMaker software stand out from the pack for the quality of their photo books.
